Day 30: Looking Back

Reading: Philippians 3

“Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,  I press on toward the goal for the prize of the  upward call of God in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 3:13-14, NASB)

Hopefully you use the mirrors on your motorcycle for more than just pretty chrome pieces. Those mirrors are actually quite helpful to see what is behind you at any given time. In fact, looking in your mirrors can make a difference in keeping you safe as you check out what is happening behind you. Using your mirrors is good, but most of you could agree that it would be really foolish to only look at your mirrors and not keep your eyes focused on where you are going. As foolish as that may sound, there are some Christians who do the very same thing in their lives. They spend too much time looking back at their past instead of looking forward, and it stymies their effectiveness as Christians. Sure, our past should give us a great testimony of what God has done in our life; but we must be careful that we don’t look back at our past in a way that prevents us from moving forward in our Christian walk.
Looking back at your past failures could keep you from trying to move forward, fearing that you may only fail again. Looking at your past hurts and disappointments could cause you not to trust others or harbor feelings of resentment and un-forgiveness toward others. Looking back at your past successes may cause you to be overly confident in your own abilities, not relying on God’s providence in your life. We need to understand that our past is just that, our past. Yes, we may have learned some things and gone through a few trials or tests but, it is time to move forward with Christ at the helm. If you have not totally traded your past for a future with Jesus Christ, there is no better time than now. The old hymn says it best, “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back. The world behind me, the cross before me….”

Father God, help me to look beyond my past failures and successes and move into the future You have for me by placing my total trust in Jesus.

  • Can you think of specific things in your past that negatively affect you from moving ahead in your life?
  • What steps will you take to put the past behind you and move forward in the calling Jesus has for you?
